Michael Nieuwesteeg joined Austroads in 2021 to lead the road safety and design program, where he manages a growing portfolio of guidance, research and implementation projects. He has a background in data and statistics and has worked in crime and injury prevention in several government agencies. Michael has worked in road safety since 2008, mostly with the Transport Accident Commission in Victoria where he managed the road safety research and evaluation program, partnered with VicRoads to establish the team that delivered Victoria’s $1.7 billion Safe System Road Infrastructure Program, and oversaw a broad program of investments in local government and community programs.
