Tyrell Siew is an industrial designer and PhD candidate at Monash University’s Mobility Design Lab. Originally working in the automotive industry in China, his career shifted unexpectedly during the early COVID‑19 pandemic, leading him to remain in Australia and take on design roles in the mining sector. This experience broadened his practice from aesthetic‑focused work to highly functional, safety‑critical design.
His PhD research stems from concern over the rising number of food delivery rider injuries and fatalities during the pandemic. Tyrell focuses on designing safer e‑bikes and mobility systems for gig‑economy workers, examining how vehicle design and regulation can reduce risk in dense urban environments. He has shared his findings with VicRoads and continues to explore opportunities to prototype and refine new mobility solutions.
Tyrell aims to bridge industry and academic practice, using design to address real‑world safety challenges faced by vulnerable workers.
